New Delhi,The Congress Working Committee today reposed faith and confidence in the leadership of party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, saying their resignations will not be a solution to the problem.
Both
Sonia and Rahul today offered to resign owning responsibility for the party’s
debacle in the general elections, but it was unanimously rejected by all the
members of the panel, party spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi said.In her opening
remarks, Sonia said the results of the elections were “extremely bad but we
must not be disheartened.”“…The work of the party continues whether we are in
office or not. Nevertheless, I feel that as a party we must introspect on the
results in all seriousness and depth,” Sonia said.
She also
indicated that there could be an overhaul or a revamp of the party structure.
She also expressed her appreciation of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s
role in the government over the past 10 years.Noting that his task has not been
an easy one specially with having to manage a coalition, economic slowdown and
a variety of other issues, Sonia said he had done so with dignity and grace at
times in the face of hostile personal attacks.Rahul Gandhi also offered to
resign at the meeting. He said the accountability that was needed at the
government level has not been done.
“Perhaps, I
also failed to be accountable,” he said. Pointing out the lapses at the
government level, Manmohan Singh took responsibility for the same particularly
on the issue of price rise and corruption.“Perhaps we failed to give proper clarification
for that (price rise and corruption)” Singh said.He also opposed Sonia Gandhi’s
offer to resign. A two-page resolution was also passed at the meeting that the
party must share responsibility for the failure.“Corrective measures must be
taken at the level of the party and the level of state government owned by the
congress. The CWC authorises the Congress President to take necessary steps in
order to revamp the party organization at all levels,” read the resolution. Out
of the 16 CWC members who contested election, 13 lost.
