Delhi, The Election Commission on Friday slapped a show-cause notice on Rahul
Gandhi for an alleged model code violation in his May 1 speech in Solan (Himachal
Pradesh) wherein he said that 22,000 people will be killed if the BJP comes to
power.The notice says the commission is prima facie of the opinion that he has
violated the code by making this statement and it will take a decision without
further reference if he does not explain his stand by 11 am on May 12.
However,
as regards Rahul entering the polling booths in his Amethi constituency without
permission, the commission sources said the matter was still being
examined. The commission has been giving others only two days’ time to
reply to its notices, but Rahul has been given three days’ time. It has
enclosed the complaint of the BJP, a news clip of Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar
and the video CD of his public meeting with the show-cause notice.In the speech,
Rahul had said that people of Japan often voice fears about whether there will
be peace in India or not. “If BJP is in power, there is bound to be “ladai”
(war) and death of 22,000 people is a foregone conclusion. The whole world is
watching whether there will be peace in India or not. Never before such a
question was being asked,” Rahul is quoted as stating.
