Udhampur (J&K) ,The Jammu Military has been awarded the best zonal Military hospital in the Northern Command.
In a function held at Udhampur, Lt Gen DS Hooda, GOC-in-C Northern Command (Army Commander) awarded the Trophy to Brigadier MM Harjai Commandant Military Hospital Jammu.
BRIEF HISTORY OF 166 MILITARY HOSPITAL
Situated at the gateway of Jammu & Kashmir, 166 Military Hospital was raised as MH Jammu in place of Section Hospital of 148 BH (Base Hospital) (which is now Command Hospital (NC) on 01 Jul 70. Renamed as 166 MH wef 01 Jun 78,the bed strength increased to 499. On 11 Nov 2006, 31 family beds of MH Palampur were shifted, hence at present it is a 531 bedded hospital with further capacity of crisis expansion of 50 beds.
The hospital has witnessed and actively participated in 1971 War. Highest numbers of casualities of Op Rakshak in Northern Command have been attended to by this hospital. The hospital has always responded actively whenever militant attacks have taken place at Jammu in the past resulting in the mass causalities. The casualties of following incidents were actively managed at this hospital-
(a) Terrorist blasts around Raghunath temple (20 Jul & 26 Jul 1995)
(b) Terrorist attack at Jammu Railway Station (07 Aug 2001)
(c) Terrorist attack at Raghunath temple (30 Mar & 24 Nov 2002)
(d) Terrorist attack at Kaluchak Military Station (14 May 2002)
(e) Terrorist attack at Sunjawan Cantt (28 Jun 2003)
The hospital had also been an active participant during Op Vijay (1999) and Op Parakram (2002).
The hospital acts as a referral hospital for the patients of Poonch, Rajouri, Akhnoor and Samba, as well as, provides cover as garrison hospital for the troops and families of Army, Air Force & GREF located in and around Jammu & Nagrota.
Recently the hospital had an active role in Op Megh Rahat. All supplies of medical logistics towards Srinagar were coordinated from Jammu by 166 MH.
Brig Man Mohan Harjai, a Paediatric Surgeon of note assumed command of this strategically located hospital on 01 Sep 12. Using his administrative acumen, vision and incredible capability of putting in long intense hours of work he transformed the image of this prestigious hospital.
Now the hospital is equipped with the state of art medical equipments. The OPD services of the hospital have been automated in terms of generation and maintenance of patient’s records. The automation of the medical stores and dispensary services are near completion. In near future, the diagnostic services and in patient services will also be automated.
