Jaipur ,The Regiment
of Artillery is celebrated its 187th Gunners’ Day on Sunday, 28
September 2014. It was preceded with a
celebration by all serving officers with veterans followed by a Barakhana for
‘All Ranks’ in Jaipur. It was on this
day that the oldest serving battery of artillery i.e. 5 (Bombay) Mountain
Battery was raised. Lieutenant General AK Sahni, GOC-in-C South
Western Command and Senior Colonel Commandant - Regiment of Artillery, greeted
the entire Gunner fraternity, on this occasion.
The
Regiment of Artillery has been an intrinsic part of all the conventional and asymmetric
wars that India has fought since independence. The gunners demonstrated
fortitude against all odds during the operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971
and in 1999 Kargil War. Since the mid
1980s, gunners have been fighting shoulder to shoulder with the infantry in Counter
Insurgency Operations in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and the North Eastern States. During the Kargil War in May-Jun 1999, the
Artillery regiments created havoc in the enemy lines by its accurate and
versatile fire power, contributing to an unprecedented victory for the Indian
Armed Forces.
The
Gunner of today, while meeting operational challenges, is exploring a vast and
technologically superior inventory of the Artillery Weapon Systems comprising
of long range guns, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and sophisticated surveillance
and locating devices/radars.
On
the occasion of the 187th Gunner Day, all ranks of the Regiment
resolved to rededicate themselves to the service of the Army and the Nation.
The Gunners’ Day was celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm in other military
stations of Rajasthan.
