Jodhpur remembered
its bravest of the brave martyred son, Late Major Shaitan Singh, PVC on his 52ndMartyrdom
Day on 18 Nov 2014. To mark this solemn occasion, a wreath laying
ceremony was organized at Paota Chowk in the heart of Jodhpur City by the
Konark Corps, recalling the supreme sacrifice made by this brave soldier.
Late Major Shaitan Singh was commanding a Rifle Company of the 13th Battalion
of Kumaon Regiment, defending the frontiers in Chushul Sector in Jammu and
Kashmir, during the winters of 1962. The brave officer gave an exemplary
demonstration of leadership by motivating his company to blunt Chinese attack
on his post, despite the vagaries, many of them frozen to death, with weapons
in their hands epitomizing the tradition of resolve and bravery even in death.
The solemn occasion was marked by laying of wreaths by Major General AS
Chowdhry, General Officer Commanding, Jodhpur Sub Area and Brig S Pachory,
Station Commander on behalf of Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews, General
Officer Commanding Konark Corps, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) RS Rathore, Zila
Sainik Kalyan Adhikari, Jodhpur, family members of Late Major Shaitan Singh,
PVC and Civil Dignitaries as a mark of respect to this brave son of the soil
who laid down his life while safeguarding the frontiers of our
motherland. A smartly turned out Guard of Honour from Army was in
attendance to provide military honours on the occasion by reversing their arms,
alongwith buglers sounding the ‘Last Post’. A large number of serving and
retired personnel of Army alongwith other civil dignitaries and children of Chopasni
School, Jodhpur were present on the occasion.
On this occasion Maj Gen AS Chowdhry also presented a shawl for ‘Veer Nari’ Mrs
Sugan Kanwar to son of Maj Shaitan Singh, PVC, Mr Narpat Singh.
