PM Modi to chair first meet of expanded Cabinet

New Delhi,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the first meeting of his expanded Cabinet and it will be followed by a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

“Cabinet meeting would be held at 5:30 pm and will be followed by a meeting of the entire council of Ministers,” a government source said.
The meeting comes a day after Modi govt inducted 21 new faces into his Council of Ministers, including former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and former Shiv Sena leader Suresh Prabhu. This was the first Cabinet expansion exercise by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, since he assumed power in May.
The major changes that were effected in Cabinet expansion that Manohar Parrikar was made new Defence minister, while Suresh Prabhu was given the charge of the Railway  ministry. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who relinquished Defence will hold additional charge of Information and Broadcasting ministry.
JP Nadda was given Health and Family welfare ministry, earlier held by Harsh Vardhan, who has now been given the portfolio of Science & Technology. With yesterday’s cabinet expansion, the strength of the Union Council of Ministers has gone up from 45 to 66. Out Of this, 27 Ministers are of Cabinet rank, 13 Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 26 Ministers of State.
After swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister congratulated his newly inducted Ministers and said he is looking forward to working with them to accelerate India’s development journey.“Congratulations to all colleagues who have taken oath today. Looking forward to working with them to accelerate India’s development journey,” Modi tweeted.
