Raipur, Red terror again struck Chhattisgarh today.
Maoists killed 13 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel including 2
officers in Chintagufa area of Sukma district. Strongly condemning the attack,
the Union Home Minister called it a ‘dastardly act’ of violence and assured all
possible help to the families of jawans killed in the Maoist ambush.
At
least 13 personnel have also been injured in the Maoist attack.
According
to a top CRPF official, over 1,000 CRPF personnel from 223 and 206 Battalion
were on area domination operation in Kasanpara village of Sukma, when they came
under indiscriminate firing attack by Maoists at around 10:30 am.
Reinforcements
are being sent to the area, with CRPF Inspector General, HS Sidhu,
leading the the offensive by security forces.
The
Home Minister expressed grief and sadness over the loss of lives and
strongly condemned the attack.
“Deeply
saddened and disturbed to know of 13 CRPF men being killed by the Naxals during
an ongoing encounter in Chhattisgarh,” Rajnath said in a tweet.
“I
express my condolences to the families of our brave CRPF men who
sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It is an act of cowardice. I
strongly condemn this dastardly act of violence.” said the Home Minister.
“13 to
15 CRPF personnel were killed in the attack that took place in Chintagufa area
of Chhattisgarh. The Naxals have carried out the attack by putting innocent
villagers as human shields,” Rajnath Singh told reporters.
The
Home Minister will leave for Chhattisgarh tomorrow and review security
situation in the region. “I am
waiting for a detailed report. I will go to Chhattisgarh tomorrow,”
Rajnath said.
The
paramilitary troopers who suffered bullet injuries have been air-lifted to
Jagdalpur for treatment. “Two
officers, one in the rank of Deputy Commandant and an Assistant Commandant,
have been killed while over a dozen personnel have been injured,” the officer
said, adding that the squad was in the jungles for the last 10 days to carry
out operations.
This is not the first ambush in Naxal-infested region of
Chhattisgarh. The latest Maoist attack dates to November 21 when the rescue
chopper of Indian Air Force (IAF) came under attack in the densely forested
area in Sukma. Maoists fired shots at IAF chopper as it tried to lift 5 injured
troopers. The chopper had come to jawans rescue after they got injured in
clashes with the Leftist militants.
The
naxal belt has claimed many lives of CRPF personnel and politicians. In one of
the instances, Congress leader Mahendra Karma and former union minister VC
Shukla were gunned down by the Naxals.
